For a player from Finland to be among Europe’s top scorers in Basketball is quite unusual. In Petteri Koponen’s case, however, this is far from all he has to boast.
The shooting guard, standing at 1.94 meters began his path to the top of Europe as a 16-year-old, playing for Finnish club Espoon Honka. After winning the national championship in 2007, Koponen was the first player from his country to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft (by the Philadelphia 76ers). However, he was not offered a contract with the 76ers, so decided to stay in Europe, moving to Virtus Bologna in 2008, where he spent many years as a regular first team player.
In this time, he also qualified for the European championship with Finland. In 2014, they even competed at the World Cup, where Petteri was the best passer, despite going out in the group stage.
With his transfer to Khimki Moscow, where he lifted the European Cup in 2015, and his 2018 cup triumph with FC Barcelona, Koponen had become one of the most feared long-distance shooters in the EuroLeague (three-point ratio of 45 percent). The family man has since settled down in the Bavarian capital and maintains a consistently high ratio.
